What’s the origin story of your business?
My business, Shelbyville Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy, was born out of necessity and passion. After my training instructor closed his school, I found myself without a place to continue my martial arts journey. Using a barn tack room as my initial training space, I started teaching Jiu Jitsu to a small group of friends. As word spread and more people joined, I realized there was a demand for Jiu Jitsu instruction in Shelbyville. With the support of my students, I rented a building and officially opened the academy
What’s an obstacle that you’ve had to overcome to build your business?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was overcoming the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The forced closure of the academy led to significant financial losses and a decline in student enrollment. However, with determination and perseverance, I was able to rebuild the business and regain momentum.
What is unique about owning and running a business in Shelbyville?
Owning a business in Shelbyville offers a unique advantage due to the niche market for Jiu Jitsu. As one of the only Jiu Jitsu schools in the area, my academy has a strong foundation and a loyal customer base. Being a lifelong resident of Shelbyville also allows me to connect with the community on a personal level.
As a business owner, what keeps you up at night?
As a business owner, my biggest concern is ensuring the continued success and growth of my academy. I worry about providing the best possible training experience for my students and ensuring their safety. Additionally, I am constantly thinking about ways to expand the business and reach a wider audience.
What’s one thing you’d say to a person starting a new business?
My advice to anyone starting a new business would be to approach it with excitement, preparation, and action. It’s important to be passionate about your venture and have a clear plan in place. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to take the leap and start pursuing your goals.
